Eight sprinters on tiny 20-inch bikes launch off an 8-meter-high ramp, fighting for the "holeshot" (first to the first turn) on a dirt track of "whoops" (rhythmic bumps), step-ups, and banked 180-degree berms. Races are held in heats of 8, with the top 4 advancing, and the "first straight" is a demolition derby where "scrubbing" (lowering trajectory over jumps) and elbows are legal, making it a 40-second heart attack that combines the strategy of a 400m sprint with the danger of motocross.
