Artistic Swimming

Formerly synchronized swimming, this high-intensity, anaerobic nightmare disguised as grace features duet and team routines where athletes hold their breath for up to 60 seconds, perform "thrusts" (explosively launching out of the water), and execute precise geometric patterns using the "eggbeater" kick. Scoring divides into Technical Routines (mandatory elements) and Free Routines (choreographed to music), and with the inclusion of male athletes in Paris 2024, the sport now recognizes the sheer strength required to anchor lifts and execute the highlight "boost" throw.
